Where it all begins...
Nikolai "Niko" Bellic is a middle-aged (approximately 30 years old) man who came to Liberty City to chase the "American Dream". His roots get back to Eastern-Europe, from where his cousin Roman called him many times. In a couple of emails Roman claims to have a fabulous life, with two women in a huge house with hot tubs and garages full of his 15 sport cars. In fact, he could only set up a small taxi business in which he wants to give a job to Nikolai as a taxi driver.
Roman decieved Niko, because he desperately needs Niko's help, hence he is heavily in debt and a lot of people are after him, as he is a tough fellow he will going to be a great help to Roman who is his only contact in the city in the beginning.
Later it becomes clear that he also has some unclosed troubles which follows him to his new life in Liberty City...
